Peatmoor Road Safety

Help us make Swinley Drive safer

Many people have raised concerns about vehicles travelling at excessive speeds on Swinley Drive for many years.

The good news is that data shows that the vast number of cars do respect the speed limit here. But a small minortiy of drivers do flout the law and put our community at risk.

Swindon Borough Council is developing a new ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) Urban Speed Camera Programme, supported by additional Government funding.

These ANPR cameras look similar to roadside speed displays, but as well as speed, a speeding vehicle’s registration number is also displayed and recorded. The technology monitors speeds over time and has been shown to act as a strong deterrent against dangerous driving in other areas. Importantly, the programme is being developed in discussion with Wiltshire Police to ensure it supports effective enforcement.

Alpha testing is already underway in the town. We believe there is a strong case for Swinley Drive to be included in this beta testing phase, but we need to demonstrate to the council that this is an important issue locally.
