Congratulations to the Whitefoot & Downham Community + Food Project
Last week I was extremely proud to attend an event in Parliament where the Whitefoot and Downham Community Food + Project from my constituency were awarded the Paul Goggins Memorial Prize.
Last week I nominated the Whitefoot and Downham Community Food + Project for an award from the All Party Parliamentary Group on Poverty.
Lewisham responds to rising food poverty
Rising costs of food and fuel, static incomes, unemployment and changes to benefits mean that the number of people accessing food banks continues to increase. Clearly food banks shouldn’t be necessary in the 21st century, but I do find the response from the community inspiring.
Earlier today I spent a lovely hour at the Goldsmiths Community Centre on the North Downham Estate to mark the end of “Hubbub” (a digital media project that has been ran by Jane Hearn with funding from the Media Trust).
1000th decent home for Phoenix
There were celebrations in Bellingham today as the 1000th person to receive a new kitchen and bathroom as part of Labour’s Decent Homes plan received a visit from local Councillors. I was really pleased to be able to join Cllr Alan Hall (far left in picture) and Cllr Susan Wise (far right) to mark the occasion.
Time out with our ex-servicemen and women
At the invitation of Lewisham’s Cabinet Member for Older People, Peggy Fitzsimmons, I popped down to the Ex-servicemen’s club on Allerford Rd yesterday.
A great morning in Whitefoot
Had a great morning canvassing in Whitefoot today. We’ve got a really enthusiatic team there – David Warwick, Janet Daby and Matt O’Mullane. They are all great ambassadors for the Labour Party and I’m lucky to have them as part of my campaign team.

Bromley Rd/Whitefoot Lane Junction Update
Just a quick update on the response that I have received from Transport for London about the junction of Bromley Road, Whitefoot Lane and Southend Lane.
If you’re leaving school or finishing university, it’s undoubtedly a difficult time to be trying to find work. At the council, Lewisham’s Mayor Steve Bullock (pictured above) has recognised this and has set up an apprenticeship scheme – on the open day about 800 interested applicants turned up.
Getting to know Goldsmiths
I paid a quick visit to the Goldsmiths Community Centre today – partly to see the computer suite used by the North Downham Training Project but also to get to meet some of the other groups that make use of the facilities during the week. It was great to meet some of the mums and toddlers who use Limelight’s provision at the centre and to gatecrash the pensioners’ lunch club.
