A rare treat … but for a good cause

A rare treat As someone who could count the number of manicures I’ve had in my life on one hand, it was a rare treat yesterday to make a flying visit to Inspire Beauty in Catford to mark national Apprenticeship Week. I was very well looked after by Charlotte, who did a brilliant job with my rather short nails!

Charlotte is based at the local salon as part of the course she is doing at Lewisham College. I’ve long been a fan of apprenticeships and know what a difference they can make to people’s lives (my dad started off his working life as an apprentice in the Railways and I think it probably made him realise that a career as an electrician was a bit more realistic than his aspirations to be a professional footballer – sorry dad, no disrespect to your sporting ability meant!).

Anyhow, I was really pleased to be able to support the College in the work that they are doing and it was great to see a new business like Inspire Beauty also benefitting from the scheme. There’s no doubt that times are tough for people trying to find work at the moment and so these sorts of initiatives can really make a difference.

Lewisham has high unemployment and it seems to me that the government should be doing more to help young people into work and not less. Their decision to axe the Future Jobs Fund, slash £0.5M from Lewisham Connexions (the career advice service) and cut grant to local councils just flies in the face of common sense. I know that the council and institutions like Lewisham College are doing all they can to counter some of this madness, but it’s getting harder and harder.
