The need to tackle the housing crisis

Channel 4 Political Slot In the last decade, Lewisham has seen some fantastic regeneration. Investment in our town centres, new schools and new transport links. It is a place with many opportunities but also many challenges.

One of the main issues that people raise with me is housing. Not only is getting a foot on the housing ladder impossible for many people, the high cost of renting in London also means that over a quarter of a million families live in overcrowded accommodation. In Lewisham, there are 17,000 people on the council’s housing register and the supply of new affordable homes falls desperately short of the demand that exists.

This housing crisis prompted me to make a short film for Channel 4′s ‘Political Slot’, which was aired last night on Channel 4. In the video I meet Olusola Adeoti and her family, who are just one example of the hundreds of constituents who have contacted me in my time as an MP for advice on housing. Olusola lives with her husband and 4 children in a 1 bedroom flat.
