31 May 2017
float your boats As part of the nationwide Great Get Together, in memory of Jo Cox, South East London residents are invited to ‘float their boats’ and join in a miniature boat flotilla on the River Quaggy.

On Saturday 17 June, we will be at Manor Park (located here) from 11am-1pm, and on Sunday 18 June, we will be at Chinbrook Meadows (located here) from 10.30am-12.30pm. The flotilla will be launched at 11.45am on both days.

Anyone is welcome to bring a boat, which can be homemade or a childhood toy – as long as it floats! On both days, there will also be a stall to help people build boats out of natural materials. Thanks to Forries Education who will be helping us on the Saturday at Manor Park.

Jo lived in a houseboat on the Thames – which links to South East London through Deptford Creek and the River Quaggy. These rivers flow through and link many communities which may have little to do with each other normally, but still have much in common. Float Your Boats will celebrate these communities coming together by inviting people to launch miniature boat flotillas in local parks.

Even if you don’t float a boat, you can bring along a picnic to enjoy the event with friends and family.

The event is being organised by Quaggy Waterways Action Group with the help of me and Vicky Foxcroft. We were friends of Jo and worked with her in Parliament. Everyone is welcome, so come along, have some fun and celebrate the things we have in common.

You can get involved on social media by tweeting #floatyourboats and #greatgettogether.
