An economy that works for everyone

HA on Catford Market A week today people across the country will be casting their vote in the General Election. For me, this election is about what sort of country we want to live in. I want to live in a country where hard work is rewarded, where prosperity is shared and where we look out for those less fortunate than ourselves. That's the sort of country the Labour Party believes in and it's why I am standing as a Labour Party candidate at this election.

Despite Tory claims that our economy is fixed, wages continue to stagnate for many workers and there has been a failure to create the secure, long-term, fairly paid jobs that we need for the next generation. This isn’t just bad for society, it is also damaging for the economy, as the wages of under-paid staff routinely have to be topped up by the Treasury through the payment of tax credits and in-work housing benefit.

I believe we have to put an end to this and to build a higher-paid, more secure economy where people are paid a decent wage. Should the Labour Party win the election next week, we will build a strong economy, invest in the NHS and support those on modest incomes. We will make sure that economic growth benefits all, not just the wealthy, and we will reduce the deficit in a fair and measured way.

I welcome the pledge that a future Labour Government would set a goal of halving the number of people in low pay by 2025, we would raise the minimum wage to £8 an hour by 2020 and we would ban exploitative zero hours contracts. We would require all firms that have a major Government contract to offer apprenticeships and we would incentivise employers to pay the living wage where possible. Alongside action to tackle unemployment and low pay we will introduce measures to ease the strain on household budgets - by, for example, taking action on energy prices, expanding free childcare for 3 and 4 year olds, increasing the supply of affordable housing and reforming the private rented sector.

Labour’s plan is one which will deliver a fairer economy for all and a better future for the next generation. If you would like to hear more about why I believe you should cast your vote for me and the Labour Party, please watch this short video which I recorded last month.
