A Bakerloo Line extension to South East London?

Bakerloo Yesterday the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, suggested on Twitter that the Bakerloo Line could be extended to the Old Kent Road.

This is encouraging news for those who have long campaigned for a full extension of the Bakerloo Line into South East London but it needs to go beyond Zone 2! Below is a letter that I have today sent to the Mayor following his tweet:

Dear Boris

Bakerloo Line Extension to South East London

I am writing to you following an exchange you had on Twitter yesterday during your #askboris engagement session. In answer to a question about extending the tube south of the river, you made reference to an extension of the Bakerloo Line down the Old Kent Road.

Your reply is encouraging to those of us who have long campaigned for a full extension of the Bakerloo Line into South East London, an area which largely remains untouched by the tube map. The London Boroughs of Lewisham and Southwark fully support this aspiration and have, over a number of years, raised the need for an extension with Transport for London.

For my constituents, one of their main public transport concerns relates to the overcrowding of SouthEastern services into and out from central London during peak hours. The extension of the Bakerloo Line, through Southwark to Lewisham and then on to join the Hayes line would significantly ease overcrowding and would increase the range of central London destinations my constituents could reach without an interchange. Improving connectivity and increasing capacity on public transport routes is necessary to realise growth and housing opportunities in south-east London and the capital more widely. With the DLR already serving Lewisham station, it is vital that any extension of the Bakerloo Line stops at Lewisham, providing a link to Canary Wharf as well as mainline train services and bus routes.

Whilst your twitter reference to the extension is welcome, it also raises a number of questions. I would therefore be grateful if you could outline what studies have been undertaken to ascertain the feasibility and likely funding requirements of extending the Bakerloo Line and what discussions you have had with local authorities about a proposed route? Can you confirm what route you would envisage the line taking beyond the Old Kent Road? Is there a timescale for taking forward these proposals and what, if any, comparative assessment have you done of the costs and benefits of the Bakerloo Line South Eastern Extension and Crossrail 2?

I would welcome an opportunity to meet with you to discuss this matter in more detail. If you are willing to meet, I wonder if I might bring interested local authority leaders to ensure our discussion is as productive and informed as possible?

I look forward to your reply and would like to share your response with my constituents who have previously expressed an interest in this matter.

Yours sincerely

Member of Parliament for Lewisham East
