It's time to tackle London's housing crisis

Channel 4 Political Slot In my three and a half years in Parliament, housing has been one of my main priorities. This is because I know from the letters I receive, the people who come to my surgeries and those I speak to in the community that London’s housing crisis is having a huge impact on the lives of my constituents. The burden of the crisis is being felt by many – whether it be by young professionals priced out of the housing market, families in overcrowded accommodation, people waiting on the housing register or rough sleepers.

This morning I spoke in a Westminster Hall debate on this very topic, where I focussed my remarks on the problems affecting my constituents and how they are being made worse by the policies of the Tory-Liberal Government. I do not believe that affordable housing is at all a priority for the Tories – it is notable that recent figures from the House of Commons Library show that Labour-run councils in London have built five times as many affordable homes as their Conservative counterparts. It is also telling that there was a distinct lack of Coalition MPs present in the debate today.

In my speech I made some suggestions as to how the crisis could be alleviated – I believe giving local authorities greater borrowing powers, better utilising public land and giving enhanced powers to local planning authorities would be a start.

You can read my speech in full here.
