Jimmy: A Legacy of Peace Last week I had the honour of hosting a reception on behalf of Barry and Margaret Mizen, the parents of Jimmy Mizen who was tragically murdered in Lee Green in 2009. Many people in Lewisham will know of Barry and Margaret, through their work with Jimmy Mizen Foundation, the Café of Good Hope in Hither Green and the City Safe Havens project. They do tremendous work to reduce violence on London’s streets and to engage young people in creating safer and stronger communities.
The reception marked the publication of Margaret’s recent book, “Jimmy: A Legacy of Peace”. It is an incredible book – honest, moving and inspiring. At heart, it is the story of a mum who lost her son in a senseless, violent attack and describes her family’s determination to ensure that something positive came of what happened on that tragic day.
Barry and Margaret work tirelessly to make our communities safer and their message of forgiveness and hope (not revenge and despair) has huge importance in a part of London that is not without its problems. I know that the Foundation will continue to extend their reach, and that Jimmy’s spirit will live through their inspiring work.
You can see a couple of photos from the event below, and read more about the work of the Jimmy Mizen Foundation here.
