Justice for Lewisham Hospital

31 July 2013
Royal Courts of Justice It has been six months since the Secretary of State, Jeremy Hunt, announced his plans to decimate A&E and maternity services at Lewisham Hospital. Today the High Court quashed that decision, stating that the Secretary of State acted outside his powers and therefore unlawfully.

This is a victory for Lewisham and a victory for the campaigners across the country who want to protect and enhance our NHS.

When the Coalition Government took the decision to decimate services at Lewisham – a solvent, successful hospital - in order to solve financial problems elsewhere, you didn’t have to be a lawyer to sense that a huge injustice was being perpetrated.

The ruling today has put right this sense of injustice and has made clear that in taking a decision about services at Lewisham in the way he did, the Secretary of State was acting unlawfully. The Government may think themselves above the law, but they aren’t.

I applaud Lewisham Council and the Save Lewisham Hospital campaign for pursuing the Government in the courts. If it wasn’t for their challenges, justice for Lewisham would not have been done as it has been today.
