28 March 2012
Yesterday the Evening Standard published an article which covered the tragic death of Kwame Ofosu-Asare in Brixton on 2 March 2012.

I have spoken personally to Kwame’s father and have passed on my condolences for his heart-breaking loss.

I will be visiting the family in their home this Friday and will also be attending Kwame’s funeral on 13 April.

The Evening Standard published their article without any contact with me. I have spoken with Mr Ofosu-Asare about the difficult judgement that politicians need to make in circumstances of a constituent’s bereavement, especially one as tragic as this. I personally believe it is important to give families space to grieve but would of course meet with any parent or relative who wished to see me.

It will be an honour for me to attend Kwame’s funeral and to meet with his family. From what I know about Kwame, he was a talented, thoughtful young man and his death should remind us all of the pressing need to tackle the problems of gangs and serious youth violence that blight our communities.

I will be continuing my work in this area.

Update 29/03/2012: Today I have written a letter to the Evening Standard, in the hope that it will be published tomorrow and address some of the concerns raised in their article this week. Please click here to read it in full.
