Joining hands for a City Safe Haven

07 December 2011
City Safe Haven On Friday I joined 600 school children from Lewisham, to celebrate the City Safe Haven campaign in Crofton Park. The campaign – organised by Citizens UK, London Citizens and the family of Jimmy Mizen – has seen 250 ‘safe havens’ declared across London where staff of businesses and shops have agreed to keep a watch over their area.

The school children were from 8 schools across Lewisham, including pupils from Rushey Green Primary School in my constituency. Along with Police chiefs, churches, temples, mosques and local residents we formed a human chain on Brockley Road while declaring “this is our community…this is OUR City Safe Haven!”. It was great to be involved in such a positive event – young people coming together to make it clear that keeping each other safe is everyone’s top priority. We even had a helicopter fly-past – think the pilot enjoyed it by the number of swoops over the crowd we had!

Thanks to Mr Jones from Prendergast-Ladywell Fields College for organising a great morning of community spirit and celebration.
