Carers Lewisham AGM I had a great couple of hours at the Carers Lewisham AGM on Friday. There are about 22,000 people with caring responsibilities in the borough and Carers Lewisham exists to support these people whose contribution to society often goes unrecognised.

As well as praising the work of staff, the Management Committee and volunteers who have made a difference this year, the AGM centred on young carers in Lewisham. Carers Lewisham have been working with young carers for 21 years and were one of the first organisations to do so. They have 500 young people registered with their service, supporting them through their clubs, activities and weekends away. I really enjoyed the young carers section which was chaired by the amazing Elijah who could definitely give Dermot O’Leary a run for his money in the presenting stakes! It was really inspirational to hear stories and performances from the young carers, each of whom had a different message as to how Carers Lewisham has transformed their life.

Carers Lewisham estimate that there are 10% of school children with caring responsibilities and I hope that all of them have the opportunity to get involved with this organisation who are making a difference to young carers lives every day. If you want to find out more about this service you can visit their website here. You can also donate to the organisation here.
