Protecting the poorest and most vulnerable
Yesterday I made the keynote address at Sitra’s Annual Policy Conference. Sitra are a charity which assists professionals and organisations working within the fields of housing, support and care – services which have been hit hard by the Coalition’s cuts.
Holocaust Memorial Day
Yesterday I contributed to the debate in Westminster Hall to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. You can read my speech here. It was an incredibly moving debate with remarkable contributions – particularly from Labour MP Ian Austin and Conservative MP Bob Stewart. It was an example of the House of Commons at its best.
Not a happy new year for commuters in Lewisham
Yesterday I spoke in a debate in the Commons on the recent increase in rail and bus fares which, combined with rising fuel prices, has significantly increased pressure on household budgets for people across the country.
Local Government Finance
Yesterday I spoke in a debate on the Local Government Finance Bill. It was a well attended debate with a large number of contributions. Sadly, it meant I had to edit my speech due to a time limit. Please click here to read the full speech I would have given if there had been no time constraint.
Happy Christmas
Just a quick post to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. The design for my card this year is courtesy of Eleanor from All Saints School in Blackheath.
Joining hands for a City Safe Haven
On Friday I joined 600 school children from Lewisham, to celebrate the City Safe Haven campaign in Crofton Park. The campaign – organised by Citizens UK, London Citizens and the family of Jimmy Mizen – has seen 250 ‘safe havens’ declared across London where staff of businesses and shops have agreed to keep a watch over their area.
Public sector strikes
This week I have received lots of emails from constituents who are planning to strike on Wednesday. These emails are from firefighters, social workers, teachers, nursery nurses and local government workers; ordinary public sector workers who, having worked in public service, believed that when they retired they would be financially secure.
Supporting Afghan Women’s Rights
On Wednesday I attended an event in Parliament to show my support for the rights of women in Afghanistan. Many of my constituents have written to me on this issue, pushing that gender equality and human rights must be key parts of any final political settlement in Afghanistan. I agree that the UK Government must continue to work with our international partners and pursue a political settlement that upholds basic human rights, religious freedom and gender equality.

Tackling youth unemployment
This week saw the release of a study carried out by the House of Commons Library into changes in youth unemployment since the coalition came to power. Lewisham East has seen an increase of 192% in number of 18 to 24 year olds who have been on jobseekers’ allowance for more than six months. This is compared to 38.5% in London as a whole.
Cracking down on websites that incite gang violence
On Tuesday I presented my 10 Minute Rule Bill to the House of Commons entitled ‘Internet Regulation (Material Inciting Gang Violence)’. For those who don’t know about the procedure, I basically got to set out my case in a speech lasting 10 minutes before, with the support of those sitting in the chamber, “presenting” my Bill to the Speaker (as in the photo above).
