15 June 2017
GE 2017 My acceptance speech at the Lewisham count for the 2017 General Election:

Thank you.

Can I start by saying a massive thank you to all the staff who have been involved in running the election today.

And thank you to my agent Jamie Milne and all my absolutely brilliant volunteers - I genuinely couldn't have done it without you.

Those of you who have been at Lewisham counts before will know that I am normally a woman of few words on nights like this but I do just want to make some brief remarks about this election.

It is an honour and a privilege to have been re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Lewisham East.

No-one knows what the overall result of the election will be but what is already clear is that there are a lot of people in a lot of different parts of the UK who want to stop the damage Theresa May and the Conservatives are doing to our country.

They have witnessed an election called because of the fallout from last year's referendum but they got a campaign which has left them none the wiser as to how it will be dealt with.

And they have seen a country thrown into turmoil by horrendous terrorist attacks with a shaky and nervous looking PM at the helm.

We don't yet know who will form a Government tomorrow but I am clear what a majority of people in Lewisham East want.

They want a Government that will do everything in its power to secure our economy - not sacrifice it in Brexit talks on ill-founded fears about immigration and so-called sovereignty.

They want decent public services - decent schools, hospitals, elderly care. They want the police to be properly resourced and no risks - ever - to be taken with our security.

They want genuine opportunities for the next generation.

And those young men and women, who seemed to have turned out in higher numbers today than in previous elections, don't want to see their futures shrunk by a backward looking, introspective and mean-spirited Government.

They want hope.

I think the next few months and the next few years are going to be really tough for our country.

I think we are entering a period of significant political turmoil and tonight is probably just the start.

I promise the people of Lewisham East that I will continue to be a hard-working, honest and accessible MP and I will do everything I can to secure the change people undoubtedly want to see.
