The junior doctors contract must be fair for doctors & safe for patients

Home / News / Health / The junior doctors contract must be fair for doctors & safe for patients

29 October 2015
Junior Doctors I have contacted by hundreds of junior doctors in recent weeks who are concerned about the Government’s proposals to change the terms and conditions of their contracts.

Last week I called for a debate in the House of Commons on the contract dispute and yesterday I led that debate. You can read my speech (including interventions from colleagues) here and the debate in full here.

Jeremy Hunt’s handling of the junior doctor contract negotiation has caused unnecessary anger. With morale in the NHS already at rock bottom, it is now a real threat to the recruitment and retention of NHS staff.

Junior doctors are the backbone of our hospitals, and we have a duty of care to them. The new contract needs to be fair for junior doctors and safe for the patients they care for.

We must not allow this Government to take us back to the bad old days of worn out staff, too exhausted to provide safe patient care and I will continue to prioritise this issue in my role as Shadow Secretary of State for Health.
