Allotments & the TA – all in Grove Park

02 July 2011
Allotments Had a lovely hour or so at the Grove Park Summer Fair today. Managed to come home with a bag full of locally grown beetroot and half a dozen locally laid eggs (produce of the Grove Park allotments!). The allotment holders also gave me a really sweet marigold (see pic below) with some top advice about how to use marigolds to protect your tomato plants (I’ve put it into practice already!).

I’ve promised to go and see the allotments later in the summer and am really looking forward to seeing how they have transformed the space from being pretty overgrown into Grove Park’s very own mini oasis.

The fair was organised by the Grove Park Community Group based at the Ringway Centre. There were loads of different stalls and some excellent food courtesy of Kamana restaurant.

It was good to catch up with some old friends and faces and also to speak to some of the guys who are based at the Grove Park TA Centre. It was really inspiring talking to Neil, who was telling me about his tour of duty in Iraq. He was based at Um-Qasr and was explaining to me what it was like getting used to being in active duty and how long he’s been involved with the Royal Artillery Volunteers. A really important reminder of what so many army volunteers sacrifice for the country.
