28 April 2009

Lewisham’s Cabinet Member for Older People, Cllr Peggy Fitzsimmons and I took some time out today to visit the Over 60s Line Dancing Group at the Downham Leisure Centre.

We were there to give them some good news about funding for the class over the next year, but they also persuaded us to have quick dance (I think it’s safe to say that we weren’t very good!).

The group has been going for a number of years but the funding that has previously covered the costs of the room hire, tutor etc has run out so Lewisham Council has stepped in to cover the costs of the group for a further year.

Council officers are also going to be talking to the company that runs the Leisure Centre about whether it might be possible to reduce or waive the room hire costs in the longer term.

It was great to see so many people there – I only wish I could go every week!
