CitySafe visit Parliament

Decided that I had to post this great collage of pictures from the visit last Thursday of pupils from Prendergast Ladywell Fields to Parliament. I had a little bit of a surprise when such a large group turned up as I was expecting just one or two pupils to accompany Derron from London Citizens to tell me about the work that they have been doing with the City Safe Haven project. As it turned out, we had a great discussion and I was able to give them a whistlestop tour of Parliament.

I was also really pleased that Barry and Maragret Mizen came up with the group as they have been instrumental in setting up the City Safe Haven Scheme. The pupils from Lewisham have been working with shopkeepers in Catford and Ladywell to build better links between retailers and young people, creating an environment where everyone hopefully feels that bit safer. With the help of South London Citizens, schools, churches and community groups across London have got involved – it seems to have taken off in a big way.

I’d have loved to have spent more time with the group but had to rush back to Lewisham for the Young Mayor announcment. Kieza Silveira De Sousa is a worthy winner and I know that he’ll do a great job over the coming year.
