Labour IS working in Lewisham East

The numbers of people claiming job seeker’s allowance (JSA) in Lewisham East is down for the third month in a row – proof that the government’s decisive action on the economy is making a real difference in this part of London.

In September there were 3289 JSA claimants across the constituency. In December this had fallen to 3060, a redution of just under 7%.

There has also been some really good news on the number of young people, aged 16-18, who are not in employment, education or training (NEETs for short). In December, a new all-time low was recorded in Lewisham with only 4.6% of 16-18 year olds not in work or at school/college.

Whilst I know that there will still be many people who are struggling to get by at the moment, I think it’s important to recognise that the action taken by government to get the economy going again, to help people back into work and to provide retraining opportunities is starting to pay local dividends.
