Supporting Young Victims of Crime

BP Lew Police

I joined Bridget Prentice MP at Lewisham Police Station last week for a government announcment on extra funding to support young victims of crime. Young people are more likely to be a victim of crime than adults and I think it’s really important to make sure that the right sort of support is in place so that young people can stay safe and, should they be a victim of crime, that help is available to enable them to move on with their lives.

For the last year Lewisham has run a pilot which brings together the police, victim support and other local agencies to work with young people. We had a really interesting discussion with some of the Young Mayor’s advisors about the sort of support that is needed and how it might be possible to deal with low level crime differently.

We talked about some of the restorative justice work which the police and youth offending team work on together and heard about some really positive examples of where young people have been able to get their life back on track thanks to the right sort of support and advice being in place.
