1000th decent home for Phoenix

Phoenix Decent Homes

There were celebrations in Bellingham today as the 1000th person to receive a new kitchen and bathroom as part of Labour’s Decent Homes plan received a visit from local Councillors. I was really pleased to be able to join Cllr Alan Hall (far left in picture) and Cllr Susan Wise (far right) to mark the occasion.

The Labour Government is committed to bringing Britain’s housing stock up to Decent Homes standard in the next few years and here in Lewisham East, we’re making great progress. In Downham and Bellingham, the new community led housing association, Phoenix, is making a tremendous difference.

I know that there is still much more to do to improve the quality of the environment on some estates but I think the council were right to put residents at the heart of the new organisation – local people know their area best and it’s only by the the council working together with local people that we are going to bring about the sorts of changes we all want to see.
